Board information & responsibilities
The River Valley Commons Board plays an essential role in the organization by setting direction, creating policy, and helping with development and other tasks. The Board does this through meetings and work it undertakes between meetings.
Meetings: The Board meets at least four times per year in person. The meetings are a time to plan and discuss specific issues facing the organization. Board members are sometimes asked to review materials ahead of time for discussion. Information gathered during the meeting is used to set direction and implement projects.
There is an annual meeting where we share an update about our work and gather feedback from the community.
Work between meetings: The Board is sent regular updates from the Executive Director. They are expected to review the updates and offer feedback, especially when requested. They are also expected to actively promote RVC and help with the organization’s work in some capacity.
It’s critical that the Board have both demographic (race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, education, socioeconomic status, age, and gender) and cognitive (diversity of thought, experiences, and ways of working) diversity. We want a variety of viewpoints to guide our work. However, all Board members should be open-minded, optimistic about the River Valley community, and committed to making a difference.
Board members’ terms are three years and begin on January 1. No member can serve more than two consecutive terms.
